La Copa América de 1983 supuso el primer desafío ganador al New York Yacht Club, que había defendido con éxito la copa durante 132 años. Un sindicato australiano que representaba al Royal Perth Yacht Club presentó el Australia IIpatroneado por John Bertrand, contra el defensor Libertypatroneado por Dennis Conner. El Australia II ganó las regatas de match-race para ganar la Copa América, poniendo fin a la racha de victorias más larga de la historia del deporte y acabando con el dominio estadounidense en las series de regatas.
