La Coupe de l’America de 1983 a été l’occasion du premier défi remporté par le New York Yacht Club, qui avait défendu la Coupe avec succès pendant 132 ans. Un syndicat australien représentant le Royal Perth Yacht Club a engagé le bateau Australia IIskippé par John Bertrand, contre le defender Libertyskippé par Dennis Conner. Australia II remporte le match race et gagne l’America’s Cup, mettant fin à la plus longue série de victoires de l’histoire du sport et à la domination des États-Unis sur la série de courses.
