Un sindacato australiano che rappresentava il Royal Perth Yacht Club mise in campo l’imbarcazione Australia IIcon lo skipper John Bertrand, contro il defender Liberty, timonata da Dennis Conner. L ‘Australia II vinse i match race e si aggiudicò l’America’s Cup, mettendo fine alla più lunga striscia di vittorie nella storia dello sport e ponendo fine al dominio degli Stati Uniti nella serie di regate.
