Ocean Alexander Megayacht 120
A new Motor Yacht, Ocean Alexander 120’ designed by Evan K. Marshall will be constructed by Alexander Marine, the manufacturer of Asia-based Ocean Alexander yachts, and American shipyard Christensen.
Motor Yacht Ocean Alexander 120’ will be the first yacht to be created by the three companies in sizes of 36, 40, and 45 meters to MCA classification. The yacht is currently in the final stages of engineering and the construction will begin early next year to keep up with the delivery date in late 2011.

Hatteras 41 “Knit Wits”
The Hatteras legend began on the barrier islands of the North Carolina shore where the frigid waters of the Labrador Current encounter the tropical Gulf Stream. The outcome is Diamond Shoals – home to some of the most turbulent and untamed waters in the Atlantic and some of the best sportfishing in the world.
Here in 1959 at Cape Hatteras, where nor’easters can blow almost as fiercely as hurricanes, Willis Slane envisioned building a boat that could conquer the waters of Diamond Shoals and surmount the Hatteras weather. It would not be an ordinary boat – no traditional wooden fishing boat could do this. This new boat would have to be rugged and robust to take the pounding of Hatteras waters. But most importantly, it would have to be a great sportfishing boat – big enough to handle a group of avid fishermen and comfortable enough for family back at the dock.
Breaking with all tradition, Slane chose a new material – fiberglass – to build this noteworthy yacht that launched an industry.
Hatteras produced its first sportfishing yacht on March 22, 1960, in the town of High Point, North Carolina. Christened the Knit Wits, she was a 41-foot twin cabin sportfisherman with a 14-foot beam and a pair of 275-hp Lincoln V-8s. The response was enthusiastic and the Hatteras legend was born. In a testament to the ruggedness that has become synonymous with Hatteras Yachts, the Knit Wits is still in service today after a fishing career that includes service in the Gulf of Mexico and Piñas Bay, Panama.

New England lobster boats — almost by definition are tradition bound. Changes to the basic design have been slight and significant only if considered over a decade or more, and there’s good reason for this. Lobster boats typically are seaworthy, maneuverable, relatively fast and have plenty of space for both working and carrying gear. The traditional design is so versatile that lobster boat hulls fined out as pleasure boats are a common sight in New England waters.

Hacker-Craft “Thunderbird” 1939 – 55 Foot Wooden Speedboat.

There is lots to be said about the THUNDERBIRD, which is a 55 foot express speedboat designed by John Hacker and built by Huckins in 1939 for Captain George Whittell, a reclusive millionaire who owned most of Tahoe’s east shore at the time.
She was launched on July 14, 1940 at Tahoe Boat Company, where she still lives, and was kept in a boathouse specially built by Whittell. THUNDERBIRD was originally powered by twin Kermath 550 hp engines.
After Whittell broke his hip late in life and refused surgery to repair the fracture, he ended up confined to a wheelchair and unable or unwilling to use the Thunderbird. Suspended by slings in the boathouse for most of the last 10 years of his life, the boat was rescued by casino magnate (and Whittell protégé) William F. Harrah, who purchased it from Whittell in 1962. Harrah had it transported to his Automobile Collection restoration shop in Reno where it was reverentially refurbished. His workmen added a matching, brushed stainless steel flying bridge and replaced the original Kermath engines with two V-12 Allison aircraft engines, each developing 1100 horsepower. Harrah used it as his private yacht for the entertainment of his casino high-rollers and showroom headliners, such as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra and Bill Cosby, to name a few. The boat was returned to Reno every winter where the mahogany hull was meticulously sanded down to bare wood and refinished with ten coats of varnish!
Ownership of the yacht was recently transfered to Foundation 36, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Nevada’s natural, cultural, and historic treasures. The yacht will now remain berthed in its original boathouse at the Thunderbird Lodge and can be viewed during tours of the estate.
