    Hatteras 41 “Knit Wits”

    Rated 0 out of 5

The Hatteras legend began on the barrier islands of the North Carolina shore where the frigid waters of the Labrador Current encounter the tropical Gulf Stream. The outcome is Diamond Shoals – home to some of the most turbulent and untamed waters in the Atlantic and some of the best sportfishing in the world.

Here in 1959 at Cape Hatteras, where nor’easters can blow almost as fiercely as hurricanes, Willis Slane envisioned building a boat that could conquer the waters of Diamond Shoals and surmount the Hatteras weather. It would not be an ordinary boat – no traditional wooden fishing boat could do this. This new boat would have to be rugged and robust to take the pounding of Hatteras waters. But most importantly, it would have to be a great sportfishing boat – big enough to handle a group of avid fishermen and comfortable enough for family back at the dock.

Breaking with all tradition, Slane chose a new material – fiberglass – to build this noteworthy yacht that launched an industry.

Hatteras produced its first sportfishing yacht on March 22, 1960, in the town of High Point, North Carolina. Christened the Knit Wits, she was a 41-foot twin cabin sportfisherman with a 14-foot beam and a pair of 275-hp Lincoln V-8s. The response was enthusiastic and the Hatteras legend was born. In a testament to the ruggedness that has become synonymous with Hatteras Yachts, the Knit Wits is still in service today after a fishing career that includes service in the Gulf of Mexico and Piñas Bay, Panama.

    Irwin 52 “Illusion II”

    Rated 0 out of 5

Designed by Irwin Yacht & Marine Corporation.

The boat that started the big boat deck-saloon revolution. The Irwin 52 was a trend-setting boat. It was a deck-saloon cruiser before there were deck-saloon cruisers. What’s more, the Irwin 52, with more than 250 hulls launched, may be the most popular big boat, 50-foot-plus, ever built. These beamy ketch-rigged cruisers offered no apologies for their motoryacht-like interior accommodations, spacious cockpit, wide side decks and raised bulwarks. It boasts of good performance under power as well as sail. Hmm, come to think of it those features sound awfully familiar? When you take a look at many of today’s larger cruising boats, it seems that Ted Irwin was a visionary.

Ted Irwin was an enigma in the industry. He was a designer, builder and world-class sailor, and during the early 1980s, his company was the largest privately owned sailboat firm in the country. He sold a lot of boats, especially big boats.

Launched in 1976, the Irwin 52 caught the sailing world off guard, suddenly it was possible to own your own small ship.

New England 42 Lobster Boat “Abigail & Carter”

    Rated 0 out of 5

New England 42 Lobster Boat “Abigail & Carter”.

Designed by Bruce King Design Associates, LLC.

Built by John’s Bay Boat Company.

New England lobster boats — almost by definition are tradition bound. Changes to the basic design have been slight and significant only if considered over a decade or more, and there’s good reason for this. Lobster boats typically are seaworthy, maneuverable, relatively fast and have plenty of space for both working and carrying gear. The traditional design is so versatile that lobster boat hulls fined out as pleasure boats are a common sight in New England waters.
